An amputated human leg was found in the mouth of a stray dog near the Apex Institute of Medical Sciences and Speciality (AIMSS) hospital campus in Shimla on Sunday, 15 February 2026, police said. The disturbing discovery was made by passersby in a public area close to the medical facility, prompting an immediate response from authorities.
Local police and health officials responded to the incident, cordoning off the area and removing the limb for forensic examination. Senior police officers confirmed that the limb appeared to have been discarded and was not connected to a recent medical procedure at the facility, and they said there were no reports of missing persons in the vicinity at the time.
The police have registered an investigation to determine the source of the amputated leg and how it came to be outside the medical campus. Forensic teams will carry out DNA and other examinations, and CCTV footage from the surrounding area is being reviewed to trace the person responsible for the
disposal.
Hospital administrators said they are cooperating fully with the investigation and emphasised that patient safety and hygiene remain their top priority. Residents expressed shock and concern, urging quicker action to prevent similar incidents.
