A speeding SUV fatally struck a pedestrian and seriously injured two others in Patna late last night, police said today, in a tragic road accident that has once again raised concerns over reckless driving in the city. The incident took place on a busy stretch of road in the Kadamkuan area, where the vehicle reportedly lost control before hitting a group of people standing near the roadside.
According to preliminary police accounts, the SUV was being driven at high speed when it veered onto the pavement, crashing into the victims who were waiting at a local roadside stall. One of the victims, a middle-aged man, was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical personnel. The other two victims, both in their twenties, sustained multiple injuries and were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment, where they remain under medical care.
Patna police quickly reached the spot after being alerted by bystanders. The SUV driver was detained at the scene and taken into custody to assist with the investigation. Police said they will conduct a detailed inquiry to determine whether alcohol, overspeeding or negligent driving contributed to the tragedy. A blood sample has been sent for testing as part of standard procedure.
Eyewitnesses described the moment as horrifying, with many saying the vehicle seemed to be travelling “much faster than it should” for the area. Local residents and commuters expressed shock over the fatal outcome, urging stricter enforcement of
Traffic officials said that Patna’s narrow urban roads, mixed vehicle flow and inadequate speed control measures can often create high-risk conditions for pedestrians, two-wheelers and street vendors, particularly during evening hours. They added that steps are being taken to enhance enforcement, including regular speed checks and deployment of additional patrol teams on major thoroughfares.
Police registered a case against the driver under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, including charges related to negligent driving and causing death by rash conduct. Investigators said they will review CCTV footage from nearby cameras to reconstruct the sequence of events and identify any contributing factors.
The body of the deceased has been sent for post-mortem examination, and relatives have been notified. Authorities appealed to motorists to follow traffic laws, avoid distractions and maintain safe driving speeds to prevent similar incidents in the future.
