Authorities investigating the car explosion that killed eight people and injured over 20 near the Red Fort in Delhi have arrested the owner of a Hyundai i20 linked to the blast. The arrested individual, a resident of Gurugram, was taken into custody following forensic and ownership tracking efforts. Investigators discovered that the vehicle’s registration had passed through multiple hands in rapid succession, raising suspicions of deliberate misuse.
The vehicle, bearing the number plate HR 26-CE 7674, was traced through CCTV footage and transport-office records. Preliminary findings show that the car had been parked in a lot adjacent to the landmark for more than three hours before it moved to the spot of the explosion. The original owner told police that he sold the car in March of this year, and the subsequent transactions—possibly involving fictitious identities—are now under scrutiny. A resident of Pulwama in Jammu & Kashmir has been identified as a buyer in one of the transfers.
Investigators have sent blast-site samples for laboratory analysis and are exploring links with a cache of bomb-making materials recently seized in a neighbouring region. The case has been registered under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and Explosive Substances Act, signalling possible terror-angle investigation. Security agencies have heightened alert levels across major states and transport hubs. The home ministry and Delhi Police emphasise that “all angles” are being pursued. As the probe deepens, officials say they will soon convene a high-level review to assess preventive measures around urban landmarks.
