The Bihar government has moved to reform the coaching sector within the state by proposing a new coaching policy that restricts government school teachers from taking up roles in private coaching institutions. Under the draft policy, coaching centres will be required to publicly disclose their fee structures to ensure transparency for parents and students, and no serving teacher will be permitted to teach in private coaching. The initiative aims to reduce conflicts of interest, improve education quality in public schools and curb exploitation in the competitive coaching market. Officials say the move will also protect teachers’ focus on classroom responsibilities and help standardise the supplementary education sector. Stakeholders expressed mixed reactions: while transparency measures were welcomed, some coaching associations raised concerns about implementation and impacts on tutoring options for students.
