Patna, September 25, 2026: The Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) has expanded the capacity of its Medicine Emergency unit by 45 beds, taking the total capacity from 60 to 105 beds.
The expansion comes as the hospital’s Medicine Department continues to handle a large number of critically ill patients. More than 150 critically ill patients reportedly arrive at the department each day, according to a report on the hospital’s latest expansion.
Why Was the Expansion Needed?
PMCH’s Medicine Department treats patients suffering from a range of serious illnesses, including fever, dengue, malaria, typhoid, pneumonia and respiratory conditions.
With the previous 60-bed capacity, the emergency unit faced pressure when patient numbers increased. Some patients reportedly had to wait for beds while receiving care in emergency areas.
The additional beds are intended to provide more space for patients requiring admission and reduce pressure on the emergency unit.
New Indoor Ward Also Operational
An indoor ward of the Medicine Department has also become operational in the same facility.
The new ward is located on the second floor of Block-II and brings emergency and inpatient services of the department closer together.
PMCH Could Reach 200 Medicine Beds
According to PMCH Superintendent Dr Rajeev Kumar Singh, the Medicine Department and related services could eventually reach approximately 200 beds once another building becomes available.
Super-Speciality Hospital Targeted for November
PMCH is also working towards making its super-speciality hospital fully operational by November 20.
Health Department Secretary Kumar Ravi has directed the construction agency to complete the remaining work. Major construction has reportedly been completed, while electrical connection, air-conditioning

PMCH is one of the most important public hospitals serving Patna and patients from across Bihar. Increasing emergency capacity could help the hospital manage patient inflow, particularly during periods when infectious and seasonal illnesses place additional pressure on public healthcare facilities.
The effectiveness of the expansion will ultimately depend not only on beds but also on doctors, nurses, equipment, medicines and timely availability of other hospital services.
