Plans are underway to develop a high-speed rail corridor linking Varanasi, Patna, and Siliguri, significantly reducing travel time across eastern and northern India. Once operational, the corridor is expected to allow passengers to travel between Varanasi and Siliguri in less than three hours, offering a major upgrade over existing rail connectivity.
The proposed route will pass through key regions of Bihar and West Bengal, strengthening inter-state connectivity and improving access to major cultural, administrative, and commercial centres. The project is part of a broader push to expand high-speed rail infrastructure and modernise long-distance travel across the country.
According to preliminary plans, trains on this corridor are expected to operate at very high speeds, enabling rapid movement between cities that currently require several hours of travel. The Varanasi to Patna stretch is projected to take under an hour, while the Patna to Siliguri segment is expected to be completed in just over two hours.
The corridor is anticipated to boost regional economic activity by improving mobility for professionals, students, and tourists. Faster travel is also expected to enhance trade linkages, support urban development, and create new opportunities along the route.
At present, the project remains in the planning and proposal stage. Detailed feasibility studies, route finalisation, and approvals are required before construction begins. Once implemented, the corridor is expected to transform rail travel in eastern India and significantly improve connectivity to the northeastern region.
