Bihar to Launch Online Land Records System from January 1 to Boost Transparency

The Bihar government announced today that it will launch a statewide online land records portal on January 1, 2026, aimed at making land information accessible, transparent and easily verifiable for landowners and the general public. The initiative is part of the Digital India Land Records Modernisation Programme and seeks to phase out cumbersome manual processes that have long been criticised for delays, lack of transparency and disputes.

Under the new system, citizens will be able to view, download and verify land ownership documents, mutation status, land maps (bhu naksha), survey records and other essential details online without visiting tehsil or patwari offices. Officials said that digitisation will reduce the scope for human error, corruption and long wait times, especially for rural landowners who previously navigated multiple steps for simple document checks.

State Revenue Minister Sanjay Kumar emphasised that the portal will link land records with Aadhaar authentication, enhancing security and ensuring that document access is tied to verified identities. A dedicated helpdesk and grievance redress mechanism will accompany the portal to assist users unfamiliar with digital tools. Offline support centres are also being planned in block headquarters to facilitate access for citizens with limited internet connectivity.

The move is expected to particularly benefit farmers, property buyers, legal professionals and financial institutions that rely on reliable land data for transactions, credit disbursal and dispute resolution. Analysts noted that streamlined online access could also reduce litigation over land ambiguities and strengthen

investor confidence in the state’s real estate market.

Government sources confirmed that extensive data cleansing and verification work has been completed in recent months to ensure accuracy before the January 1 rollout. Training sessions for revenue officials and public awareness campaigns are underway to ensure smooth transition to the new platform.

With this digital push, Bihar joins several other Indian states in adopting modern land-records infrastructure, signalling a broader governance reform focused on citizen convenience, transparency and dispute avoidance.
