The Bihar government today announced formation of a dedicated “Abhaya Brigade” at every police station across the state to enhance protection of women and girl-students. The new unit will be commanded by a woman sub-inspector, assisted by a team of three constables (one woman + two men), equipped with scooters or other mobility for rapid response. The brigade’s mandate includes identifying harassment hotspots — around schools, colleges, market-zones, transit points and railway stations — and taking prompt legal action against offenders. The state said the move reflects a renewed commitment to curb crimes against women and ensure safer surroundings for girls commuting for studies or work. Officials also indicated that recruitment and resource mobilization for the brigade would begin immediately.
