A proposal to rename Patna as Patliputra was raised in the Rajya Sabha, bringing the city’s ancient heritage into the national spotlight. The demand was put forward by Upendra Kushwaha, who called on the central government to consider restoring the historical name associated with one of India’s most significant ancient capitals.
Speaking during a discussion in the Upper House, Kushwaha stated that Patliputra holds immense cultural and historical importance as the seat of power for major ancient empires, including those of the Mauryan period. He argued that reviving the old name would acknowledge the city’s civilisational legacy and reinforce its identity in the national consciousness. According to him, the present name Patna evolved over centuries, while Patliputra remains deeply rooted in India’s historical narrative.
Kushwaha also drew attention to earlier instances where cities reverted to their traditional names, suggesting that similar recognition should be extended to Patna. He maintained that such a move would not merely be symbolic but would serve
The demand has sparked discussions beyond Parliament, with varying opinions emerging from political circles and the public. While supporters view the proposal as a step toward reclaiming historical pride, others point to administrative, logistical, and economic considerations involved in renaming a state capital. As of now, no formal decision has been announced, and the matter remains under consideration.
