The Bihar state government today launched a 22-day campaign focused on male sterilisation and increased male participation in family-planning efforts. Health-officials said the initiative starts with a “couple-contact week” involving outreach and awareness, followed by a service fortnight offering vasectomy camps, contraceptive distribution and counselling sessions. The theme of the campaign highlights the role of men in achieving a “healthy and happy family.” Mobile vans and community-vehicles will traverse rural areas to engage couples, especially where female partners have traditionally borne the burden of sterilisation. Compensation is offered for income-loss and follow-up care is assured for those who undergo the procedure. The campaign addresses long-standing gender imbalance in family-planning uptake and aims to reduce resistance from households where male sterilisation remains stigmatised. Officials hope the move will enhance service-coverage, ease pressure on female-centric methods and promote equitable reproductive responsibility. Community leaders emphasised the need for sustained messaging and social-norm change to complement medical interventions.
