The Opposition Congress on Monday, 3 March 2026, sharply criticised the Narendra Modi government’s foreign policy following reports of intensified military strikes against Iran after the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Party leaders described the developments as a betrayal of India’s traditional values of peace and non-alignment.
Addressing the media, senior Congress spokespersons argued that India’s diplomatic posture has been weakened by what they termed unconditional alignment with Western powers, particularly the United States and Israel. They said New Delhi’s response to the crisis in the Middle East lacked clarity and failed to reflect India’s historic commitment to peaceful conflict resolution.
The party also cited remarks made by Robert Vadra, who stated that India’s policy should prioritise “the ethos of peaceful coexistence” and advocate diplomatic solutions instead of appearing to back military interventions. Congress leaders reiterated their call for a balanced foreign policy that protects national interests while respecting international law and human rights.
Responding to the criticism, government officials defended India’s strategic engagements, emphasising that safeguarding regional stability and protecting Indian citizens abroad remain central to its foreign policy approach. They said India continues to engage diplomatically with all parties affected by the crisis.
The issue is likely to feature prominently in parliamentary discussions and political campaigning as parties debate the broader implications of evolving global security dynamics.
