Indian Railways has announced a revision in passenger fares effective from 26 December 2025, affecting millions of travellers across important long-distance routes including Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata. Under the new pricing structure, fares for General and Sleeper Class coaches will increase modestly, marking the first major adjustment in several months.
According to the revised tariff guidelines released today, the hike will apply proportionally based on distance and class type, with the largest changes seen on longer inter-city sectors. Officials explained that the fare revision aims to balance operational costs amid rising fuel, maintenance and staff expenditure, even as the railways continues efforts to maintain affordable travel for the majority of passengers.
The announcement has drawn reactions from commuters, transport analysts and public forums. Daily travellers and budget passengers expressed concern that even small increases could impact household travel budgets during the holiday and winter travel peak. Some regular passengers suggested that periodic fare boosts should be coupled with improvements in cleanliness, punctuality and onboard amenities, especially for sleeper travelers on routes exceeding 12 hours.
Railway officials stated that concessions and subsidised fares for students, senior citizens and differently-abled passengers will remain largely unaffected by the revision. The ministry noted that the fare increase reflects a calibration intended to sustain railway finances without burdening the most vulnerable segments.
