Ranchi, August 10, 2026: Tensions escalated in Ranchi on Monday as thousands of students and job aspirants marched towards the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly, demanding transparency and accountability in the state’s recruitment examination system.
The protest, which has continued for more than two weeks, is primarily linked to alleged irregularities in examinations conducted for government recruitment through the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC). The protesting candidates are demanding a fair recruitment process and have been pressing for an independent CBI investigation into the alleged irregularities.
Security Tightened Across Ranchi
Ahead of the planned Vidhan Sabha March, Ranchi authorities significantly increased security around the Assembly area. Barricades and barbed-wire fencing were installed, while prohibitory restrictions were imposed in sensitive areas. Schools in parts of Ranchi were also kept closed as a precautionary measure.
Despite the heavy security arrangements, large numbers of students gathered and began moving towards the Assembly. Reports said protesters breached barricades during the march, following which police used water cannons and tear gas, while lathicharge was also reported as authorities attempted to control the situation.
Students Remain Firm on Their Demands
The protesters have rejected the government's efforts to resolve the matter through existing investigations and continue to demand a CBI probe. The government, meanwhile, has maintained that substantial progress has already been made on the students' demands and has indicated steps including an ED inquiry and a fast-track legal process.
The agitation has also seen the participation of student leaders and political figures.
Government Appeals for Dialogue
Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren has appealed to the protesting students to resolve the issue through dialogue. He has said that the concerns of the students are being taken seriously and emphasized the need for justice and transparency rather than confrontation.
The situation in Ranchi remains tense as students continue to push for their demands while authorities maintain strict security arrangements around the Assembly. The developments have put renewed focus on the transparency of government recruitment examinations and the concerns of thousands of young aspirants seeking employment in Jharkhand.
The Ranchi protest has now emerged as a major student movement, with the coming days likely to be crucial for determining whether the government and protesters can reach a mutually acceptable solution.
