India’s telecom regulator has issued a cautionary statement that simply blocking unwanted numbers may not be enough to halt the increasing number of spam calls. The regulator pointed to the fact that spam callers keep switching numbers, using spoofing techniques and exploiting loopholes. Instead, users are being urged to report spam calls through the dedicated DND (Do-Not-Disturb) mobile app so that systemic action can be taken. The regulator has proposed stricter tracking of spoofed numbers, sharing of intelligence with service providers and establishing stronger penalties for repeat offenders. Industry sources said that while major carriers have improved spam-filtering tools, the rapid evolution of caller-ID masking and automated dialing continues to outpace controls. Consumer-rights groups welcomed the announcement but warned that enforcement will be key to real impact.
