Bihar Museum in Patna Enters Global Top 10, Puts Bihar on the World Cultural Map
Patna, October 31, 2026: Bihar Museum in Patna has achieved a major international milestone by securing the 9th position in the 2026 list of the world’s 100 best museums published by travel guide Worth a Journey.
The recognition also places Bihar Museum at the top among Asian museums in the ranking. It is the only Indian museum to feature in the global top 100 list this year.
Bihar Museum ranks ahead of The Met
The Patna museum has been placed ahead of several internationally famous institutions. New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, popularly known as The Met, secured the 10th position, while the Louvre in Paris was ranked 31st.
Mexico City’s Museo Nacional de Antropología topped the 2026 list, followed by Madrid’s Museo del Prado and Denmark’s Louisiana Museum of Modern Art.
Bihar Museum’s position is particularly significant because it puts a museum dedicated largely to Bihar’s history and heritage alongside some of the world’s most recognised cultural institutions.
A journey through Bihar’s history
The museum preserves Bihar’s history from the Stone Age to the modern era. Its collections include ancient sculptures, rare coins, manuscripts and regional folk art.
But the museum’s appeal is not limited to its collection. Its contemporary architecture, open courtyards and landscaped spaces are also part of the visitor experience.
This combination of history, art, architecture and modern museum design has helped make the institution an important cultural destination in Patna.
Why this matters for Bihar
For Bihar, the recognition is more than
Bihar has one of India’s richest historical landscapes, with connections to ancient kingdoms, Buddhism, Jainism, Nalanda and several major cultural traditions. A globally recognised museum gives visitors another reason to explore that history in one place.
The international ranking could also strengthen heritage tourism in Patna and encourage greater attention toward Bihar’s museums, historical sites, artists and traditional crafts.
Patna gets a global cultural spotlight
The recognition gives Patna an unusual place on the international cultural map.
At a time when cities compete to attract tourists through museums, cultural spaces and heritage experiences, Bihar Museum’s global ranking gives Patna a strong cultural story to tell.
For Bihar, the message is simple: the state’s history is not just important within India — it is attracting international attention too.
For Patnaites, this is a moment of pride: a museum in the heart of Patna has entered the global top 10.
