Following allegations of rape involving a student of Lovely Professional University (LPU), the students’ protest became so intense that police had to resort to a lathi charge to control the situation. The protest led to the Jalandhar-Phagwara highway being blocked for nearly 20 hours, bringing traffic to a complete standstill.
According to the latest reports, the situation is now under control, and LPU students have started returning to their respective homes. In view of the escalating protests, the university has suspended regular classes for 10 days. As a result, students are now leaving for their homes.
As the situation became tense, parents arrived at the university to take their children home. A large number of students were seen outside the university carrying their belongings and leaving for home along with their family members.
Regarding the students’ protest at Lovely Professional University, Gurmeet Kaur, Commandant of the 27th Battalion, said, “We have arrested five youths. A sickle and a walkie-talkie have been recovered from their possession. They have now been taken into custody.”
She added that all of them would be questioned. So far, it has not been established where these individuals came from or what they had come there to do.
