In a robust response to recent assertions by China regarding territorial claims, the Chief of the Indian Army today categorically rejected Beijing’s stance on the Shaksgam Valley, reaffirming that the region has been an integral part of India’s sovereign territory. The statement comes amid renewed diplomatic tensions following comments by Chinese officials suggesting historical ambiguity over borders in the high-altitude region, which was historically part of India’s princely state of Jammu and Kashmir before the mid-20th century.
In an official briefing, the Army Chief said that India’s claim over Shaksgam Valley is grounded in historical documents, legal titles and established administrative records. He emphasised that such attempts to challenge settled boundaries are “unacceptable and contrary to the understanding reached by both sides”. The remarks reiterated India’s longstanding position that any unilateral claims undermining its territorial integrity will not be recognised.
The Army Chief also stated that India remains committed to maintaining peace along its borders while firmly defending its territorial interests. He underlined the importance of diplomatic engagement and mutual respect for internationally recognised boundaries, but stressed that India’s resolve to protect its frontiers remains unwavering.
Defence analysts said that the comments signal New Delhi’s intent to push back against narratives that could alter perceptions of historical borders. The Shaksgam Valley, situated north of the Karakoram Pass and currently under Pakistani administration, has been a subject of geopolitical sensitivity, and any external assertions over its status can have strategic implications.
