The Bihar government is preparing to roll out a major inland waterways transport initiative that could significantly reduce logistics costs for businesses across the state. Under the proposed plan, up to 100 tonnes of goods can be transported at nearly half the cost compared to conventional road transport, officials said.

The initiative focuses on strengthening cargo movement through rivers and internal waterways, offering a cost-efficient and environmentally friendly alternative for bulk goods transport. By shifting heavy cargo to water routes, the government aims to ease pressure on highways, reduce fuel consumption and lower overall operating expenses for traders and manufacturers.

Officials said inland waterways are particularly suitable for transporting commodities such as agricultural produce, construction material, coal, cement and industrial raw materials. Compared to road transport, water-based logistics allow larger volumes to move in a single trip, resulting in reduced per-unit transportation costs.

The plan is expected to benefit small and medium enterprises, traders and logistics operators by improving supply-chain efficiency and price competitiveness. Lower freight costs could also help Bihar-based businesses expand to new markets and improve profit margins.

In addition to economic advantages, the initiative is aligned with sustainability goals, as inland waterways produce lower carbon emissions and reduce traffic congestion. The government is working on infrastructure development, including terminals, loading facilities and navigation support, to ensure smooth implementation.

Industry experts said the move could transform Bihar’s logistics landscape if supported by timely execution and coordination between transport authorities and the private sector. Once operational, the waterways-based system is expected to strengthen trade,

boost regional connectivity and support long-term economic growth in the state.
