The Bihar government has formally recommended that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) take over the investigation into the death of a female National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) aspirant in Patna. This decision comes amid serious allegations from the victim’s family and mounting public scrutiny over the handling of the case.
The teenager, originally from Jehanabad district, was found unconscious on January 6 in her room at Shambhu Girls’ Hostel in Chitragupt Nagar, where she was staying to prepare for the medical entrance exam. She was rushed to a private hospital but died on January 11 after remaining in a coma for several days.
Family members have strongly alleged that she was sexually assaulted and murdered, accusing the local police of attempting to suppress evidence and initially dismissing the case as a suicide. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) had been probing the matter, but the family and sections of the public described the progress as slow and lacking in transparency.
Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister Samrat Choudhary confirmed that Chief Minister Nitish Kumar wrote to the Government of India recommending a CBI probe to ensure a transparent and just investigation. The move follows demands by the victim’s family and student protests calling for a central investigation.
The state government has also issued a formal notification under the provisions of the Delhi Special Police Establishment Act to facilitate the CBI’s involvement.
The case has generated significant political debate within Bihar, with opposition leaders criticizing the state administration’s earlier response and urging swift judicial oversight.
