Patna: Bihar has crossed a major milestone in the annual life-verification drive for beneficiaries of its social security pension schemes. More than 1.03 crore pension beneficiaries have completed the verification process, according to figures from the state Social Welfare Department.

Out of 1,16,71,188 registered beneficiaries, life verification has been completed for 1,03,13,620 people, taking the overall completion rate to 88.37%. However, more than 13.57 lakh beneficiaries are still yet to complete the process.

Why Is Life Verification Important?

Life verification is an annual process used to confirm the status of pension beneficiaries and keep government records updated.

The exercise is particularly important for social security schemes that support senior citizens, widowed women and persons with disabilities. By updating beneficiary records, the government aims to maintain transparency and ensure that pension assistance reaches eligible recipients.

Madhubani Leads the Verification Drive

Among Bihar's districts, Madhubani has recorded the highest number of completed life verifications, with 5,09,290 beneficiaries completing the process.

It is followed by:

  • Patna: 4,91,125

  • East Champaran: 4,85,930

  • Muzaffarpur: 4,62,294

  • Samastipur: 4,35,744

However, there is an important distinction: Madhubani leads in the number of completed verifications, while Patna has the highest total number of registered pension beneficiaries, with 6,17,153 people enrolled in the schemes.

More Than 13.5 Lakh Beneficiaries Still Pending

Despite the progress, 13,57,568 beneficiaries have not yet completed their life verification.

The Social Welfare Department has urged these beneficiaries to complete the process within the stipulated period. The annual verification is required by November 30, according to the latest reports.

For beneficiaries who depend on these pensions as a regular source of financial support, completing

the verification on time is important.

What This Means for Bihar

The numbers show the enormous scale of Bihar's social-security network. With more than 1.16 crore registered beneficiaries, even a small percentage of pending verifications represents lakhs of people.

The government's challenge now is to reach the remaining beneficiaries, particularly those who may face difficulties accessing the verification process.

The exercise is not simply about updating a database. For millions of elderly people, widowed women and persons with disabilities, the pension represents an important source of financial assistance.

With 88.37% verification already completed, Bihar has made substantial progress. The focus now shifts to completing the remaining 13.57 lakh verifications before the deadline.
