The central government has invoked the Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA) to prevent hoarding of LPG cylinders and ensure uninterrupted supply across the country, including states such as Bihar and Jharkhand. The move comes amid concerns about possible shortages of cooking gas as global energy markets face disruptions due to geopolitical tensions.
Officials said the decision was taken after reports of panic buying and stockpiling of domestic LPG cylinders in several regions. Authorities fear that such practices could create artificial shortages and affect the regular distribution system meant for households. Under ESMA provisions, strict action can be taken against individuals or entities found hoarding or illegally storing cylinders.
In addition to the enforcement measure, authorities have introduced steps to regulate bookings and ensure fair distribution of LPG cylinders. The government has urged consumers not to panic and to book cylinders only as per their normal requirement.
Officials said monitoring of supply chains and LPG distribution networks has been intensified to maintain stable availability of cooking gas across the country.
