India’s biometric-based Digi Yatra system is preparing to expand into international travel following successful trials at Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport. The move marks a significant step in the evolution of the country’s digital air travel infrastructure.
Digi Yatra, which currently enables seamless domestic travel using facial recognition technology, allows passengers to move through airport checkpoints without physical documents. The system links a traveller’s identity with their boarding pass, ensuring a contactless and paperless experience while maintaining security standards.
The proposed international rollout is expected to involve integration with passport data, allowing passengers flying abroad to use the same biometric-based verification. Trials conducted at Bengaluru airport have reportedly demonstrated the feasibility of extending the system beyond domestic routes.
Officials believe that expanding Digi Yatra to international operations could significantly reduce waiting times at airports, particularly during identity verification and boarding processes. The system is also being aligned with global aviation standards to ensure interoperability with international travel frameworks.
