India and the European Union (EU) are on the verge of finalising a landmark Free Trade Agreement (FTA), often described by leaders as the “mother of all deals”, ahead of a high-level summit scheduled around Republic Day celebrations in New Delhi. The anticipated pact would be one of the largest and most significant trade agreements India has negotiated, potentially reshaping economic ties between the two major trading partners.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that talks are in their final stages and that there is optimistic momentum toward concluding the trade deal. Negotiators from both sides have been working to bridge differences that linger after years of negotiations, with discussions intensifying as senior EU leaders prepare to attend India’s Republic Day events and the bilateral summit immediately thereafter.
The proposed agreement aims to lower tariffs on key goods, expand market access for services, and enhance investment flows between India and the EU’s 27 member states. It could significantly boost sectors such as textiles, pharmaceuticals, machinery and IT services by reducing trade barriers and opening up new commercial opportunities for Indian exporters across Europe.
In addition to trade liberalisation, the dialogue is expected to cover broader strategic cooperation, with potential deals on defence partnerships, mobility frameworks for professionals and deeper economic collaboration under discussion. The negotiation process, relaunched in 2022 after a long hiatus, reflects mutual interest in diversifying trade and navigating global economic uncertainties.
