The long-anticipated trade agreement between India and the United States has reached a critical stage, with top government officials saying key elements are now close to completion and a joint statement could be issued within days. Piyush Goyal, India’s Commerce and Industry Minister, said the first tranche of the proposed bilateral trade pact is in a nearly final form and that both countries are likely to sign a joint statement on the agreement within the next four to five days. A more detailed legal agreement is expected to be signed by mid-March 2026.
Officials from both sides have been negotiating the framework of the agreement, which seeks to recalibrate tariff structures and deepen economic cooperation. Once the joint statement is issued, the United States is expected to implement an executive order to cut tariffs on Indian exports from current levels to around 18 percent, a significant reduction aimed at expanding market access for Indian goods.
The pact’s first phase, covering tariff and trade liberalisation measures, has been prepared as negotiators work
to finalise the legally binding text. The formal legal agreement scheduled for mid-March will codify these terms and set the detailed commitments for tariff adjustments, market access, and other trade-related provisions.
Government representatives have stressed that safeguards for sensitive sectors, including agriculture and dairy, will be built into the deal to protect domestic interests. However, farmers’ groups and opposition parties have raised concerns about potential impacts on local producers, calling for greater transparency once full details are available.
The upcoming joint statement and subsequent legal agreement mark a significant milestone in India-US economic relations and signal a renewed focus on strengthening bilateral trade ties after months of tariff tensions.
