The Bihar government has appointed Dr. Rajiv Kumar Singh as the new Superintendent (Chief) of Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH), ending a period of administrative uncertainty and controversy surrounding the institution.
Dr. Singh, currently a Professor and Head of the Physiology Department at PMCH, will officially assume charge on January 31, 2026. The decision was formalized through a notification issued by the state’s Health Department.
The move replaces the previous head, Dr. I.S. Thakur, whose tenure had been extended twice but had recently faced criticism and controversy. Government officials indicated that the leadership change reflects a desire to remove administrative issues and restore public confidence in one of the state’s most important health institutions.
Dr. Rajiv Kumar Singh is regarded as having a strong academic and professional background. A graduate of Bhagalpur Medical College with postgraduate training from PMCH, he joined the institution in 2010 and has been recognized for his work as a teacher and clinician. Some observers also noted his family background and connections as adding to the perception of balanced administrative leadership.
The appointment comes at a time when PMCH, planned to be upgraded into a 5,400-bed mega hospital, is undergoing major expansion and restructuring. The government has emphasized that the new leadership will focus on strengthening systems, improving patient care quality, and ensuring that administrative controversies do not detract from the hospital’s services to the public.
