The government may soon introduce a new “Social Media Code of Conduct” for government officials. The aim is to regulate watching, sharing, or posting reels, videos and stories during duty hours, as well as posts expressing personal opinions.
According to reports, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has directed senior bureaucrats to consider the possibility of introducing such a code. Cabinet Secretary T. V. Somanathan has also shared key points related to the proposal after a meeting with government officials.
With the growing use of social media, questions have been raised about government officials watching reels and making personal posts while on duty. According to officials, the existing conduct rules were framed at a time when social media was not prevalent. Therefore, there is a growing need for clear guidelines governing the use of social media by government employees.
One of the important aspects of the proposed social media code will be that officials should not use social media posts to glorify their position or government work.
Meanwhile, the government is also considering launching an “Ek Bharat” portal for citizens. Its objective is to eliminate the need for separate usernames and passwords across multiple websites for different government services.
Once the portal is launched, citizens may be able to access multiple government services using a single username and password.
