In hopes of building “Atma Nirbhar Bharat” and boosting Bihar’s infrastructure development, the state cabinet has approved two major projects: the Patna-Arrah-Sasaram Corridor and the Kosi-Mechi Intra-State Link. These projects are expected to transform the state’s transportation system, reducing travel time, improving trade links, and contributing to overall development. 

 

Patna-Arrah-Sasaram Corridor: A Game Changer for Connectivity

 

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has approved the construction of a 4-lane, access-controlled Patna-Arrah-Sasaram corridor (NH-119A). Here’s what the accepted proposal of the project looks like: 

 

  • Length and Cost: The corridor will span 120.10 km and be built for Rs. 3,712.40 crore.

 

  • Development Mode: The project will be developed under the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM), a method where the government and private companies share costs.

 

  • Current Situation: The route is currently very crowded and depends on state highways. Travel between Patna and Sasaram takes 3-4 hours due to the congestion.

 

  • Improvements: The new corridor will include both greenfield (new) and brownfield (existing) developments, which will help reduce traffic jams and make travel faster.

Kosi-Mechi Intra-State Link: Strengthening Regional Connectivity

 

In a separate decision, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has approved the Kosi-Mechi Intra-State Link Project under the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchai Yojana – Accelerated Irrigation Benefits Programme (PMKSY-AIBP). Here’s what you need to know:

 

  • Project Cost: The project is expected to cost Rs. 6,282.32 crore.

 

  • Central Financial Aid: The central government will provide Rs. 3,652.56 crore for the project.

 

  • Completion Timeline: The project is expected to be completed by March 2029.

The project will divert excess water from the Kosi River to irrigate the Mahananda basin in Bihar. This will create an additional irrigation capacity of 2.10 lakh hectares across four districts: Araria, Purnea, Kishanganj, and Katihar.
