The Patna district administration today announced that all schools including government, private and municipal institutions will remain closed until January 11, 2026, as severe cold wave conditions and dense fog continue to affect safety and travel in the region. The closure applies to students from pre-primary up to Class 8, and is aimed at protecting children from dangerously low temperatures, poor visibility during early morning travel and rising cases of winter-related illnesses.
The decision follows repeated weather forecasts indicating that temperatures will remain low, with dense fog likely to continue disrupting road and rail travel across Patna and surrounding districts. Earlier closures had been scheduled through early January, but authorities decided to extend the break after consulting with meteorological and health officials to prioritise student wellbeing.
Under the directive, schools have been asked to reschedule academic activities and plan for makeup classes or alternative learning arrangements once conditions improve. Exceptions may be considered for limited board examination-related sessions, provided safety protocols are strictly followed and
District Education Officer officials emphasised that attendance policies will be adapted so that students are not academically disadvantaged due to the extended break. Schools are also being encouraged to use digital platforms to support learning where possible and to communicate clearly with parents about revised schedules.
Parents have expressed mixed reactions; while many welcomed the extended closure due to health and safety concerns, some worried about disruptions to academic progress, particularly for senior and board-class students. Education authorities assured families that academic calendars will be adjusted and that examinations will proceed at appropriate times without undue pressure on students.
Medical experts reiterated that extreme cold and fog increase the risk of respiratory problems and advised families to keep children warm, limit unnecessary travel and seek early medical care for persistent symptoms. Civic agencies said they will monitor conditions daily and provide further updates as needed.
