The Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park in Patna is set to introduce several new and rare animal species as part of an animal exchange programme with other zoos in India. The initiative is expected to enhance both the diversity of wildlife and the overall visitor experience at the zoo.
Under the programme, agreements have been finalised with zoos in Delhi and Rohtak. As part of this exchange, Patna Zoo will receive a white tigress, which is expected to become a major attraction. Additionally, six sangai deer, a rare species native to Manipur, will also be brought to the zoo.
The exchange will also include several bird species, such as pelicans and painted storks, along with blackbucks, which are likely to boost the zoo’s bird and herbivore sections. These additions are aimed at increasing the variety of species available for visitors and improving the ecological balance within the zoo.

Officials stated that such exchange programmes are crucial for maintaining genetic diversity among captive animals. They help prevent inbreeding, improve the health of species, and support long-term conservation efforts.
The initiative is expected to not only strengthen conservation practices but also make the zoo more engaging for visitors by introducing new and unique wildlife species.
