Member of Parliament Pappu Yadav today launched a dedicated helpline number for girls residing in hostels across Purnia district, aiming to enhance safety, provide support and address concerns related to their wellbeing. The initiative, announced during a public event attended by local leaders and community members, is intended to give female students and working women a direct channel to access assistance, report grievances and seek guidance on security, health and hostel management issues.
Pappu Yadav said that the helpline is part of broader efforts to strengthen protective measures for young women living away from home, particularly those pursuing education or employment in urban centres within and beyond Purnia. He emphasised that the facility is open 24 hours a day, and will be staffed by trained counsellors and support personnel who can respond to queries, offer counselling, help coordinate with local authorities and provide timely assistance in emergency situations.
The MP stressed that the helpline will work closely with police units, hostel management committees and district officials to address issues ranging from safety concerns, harassment, accommodation problems and mental health needs. He also urged families and hostel residents to familiarise themselves with the number and make use of the service whenever necessary.
Local educators and parents welcomed the move, saying that female students often face challenges when living away from home, including security, loneliness and adjustment issues, and that a dedicated support line could help reduce anxiety and prevent crises. They noted that immediate
District officials said they will support the helpline by raising awareness in schools, colleges and hostel communities, and by ensuring that the service is promoted through social media, community groups and local networks. They added that additional measures, such as safety workshops and community watch groups, are being explored to bolster the initiative.
Pappu Yadav also said that feedback mechanisms will be put in place so that the helpline can evolve based on the needs of callers and emerging concerns. Users of the helpline will be able to request anonymity, and support staff have been trained to handle sensitive calls with discretion and empathy.
The helpline launch was met with applause from young women attending the programme, who described the service as a “positive step” toward creating a supportive and secure environment for girls living in hostels and away from their families.
