Police in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh have arrested a 24-year-old man for allegedly murdering his co-worker and friend, claiming the victim once “tricked” him into eating beef and later humiliated him in front of others, prompting a revenge attack. The accused, identified as Virendra Yadav, was taken into custody from his maternal uncle’s home after investigators linked him to the crime during a detailed probe.

The body of 28-year-old Aftab Alam, a resident of Bihar’s Chhapra district, was discovered earlier this month near a pond in Mahagaon Madai village. Police said blood was visible from his mouth and nose when the body was found, triggering a deeper inquiry. Mobile and digital evidence, including bank transactions and CCTV footage, helped law enforcement identify Virendra as a suspect and ultimately lead to his arrest.

During interrogation, Virendra claimed that the motive for the killing was revenge after he was allegedly mocked and humiliated for consuming beef — an act that, in parts of India, can trigger deep social and religious sensitivities. He told officers that he lured Alam to a remote location and strangled him with a rope, asserting that the earlier incident had caused lasting shame.
